So I bought a repair kit: six cameras from B&H for $375 and it came with NVR and power injector. Everything worked the first time I realized I couldn't use my existing desktop, or at least I couldn't. I'm not sure, but I believe they are no longer made; History of my e-purchases. I certainly wouldn't pay full retail price for this set but it's nice and works well. So I already had an extra monitor and after reading steps 1 and 2 again I plugged it in, plugged in the included mouse and a menu appeared. From there it was pretty easy. I connected the NVR to my router as suggested, hoping to access content on my video editing desktop. It's still possible, but I've never received a prompt to update the firmware using this connection, which I thought was odd and never could. It's almost as if he didn't know he was connected to the internet. Hmmm. At first I had an inverted image on each camera and tried to get tech support from Hikvision but when they found out I bought from B&H they quickly turned me over to them; so thoughtful. I like B&H, but they seemed more interested in adding more hurdles than helping with firmware updates, which I felt was the solution. Long story short, I literally rotated the lenses 180* and it fixed it. You see they are actually made to be mounted on a flat ceiling and the orientation would be fine but I mounted them vertically and that was my problem. They can do it, but how helpful and easy of them to mention it somewhere. There is actually a word "up" written on the lens, but I only saw it when rotating the lens. Again, a warning of this fact would have saved me a lot of time that I will never get back. I think this is another example of how real consumers are not used to test the installation process, not really smart engineers. I know engineers; You won't understand what I'm talking about. Another thing is when you connect your dedicated monitor, just connect the included mouse to the NVR and don't expect your desktop to be enough. This makes many things possible as you maneuver through the menu. I knew it was a PoE system and I didn't mind running the cable as I could handle the frame installation in my commercial building. If I were doing a home upgrade, I would definitely consider a wireless system for convenience. Hope that helps.
