I got this to replace a heavier rain jacket for backpacking, with occasional dual-use as a tarp.Overall, this is a great choice! It's definitely waterproof, it's rip-stop nylon so it's going to outlast pure PVC options, and it's very light weight. I like that there's a draw-string around the hood, and having grommets to dual-purpose this as a tarp is a nice feature. The major downside is the snaps. They're plastic and not very large, but very stiff. They hold fine but they're hard to unsnap - I could easily see tearing these through over time because it takes more force to un-snap them than the coat around them can handle. You can see the fabric stretch slightly each time you un-snap one. Also, the placement is funky - the two rows that snap together to make sleeves don't line up.Size-wise this is a bit of a compromise. It's small for a tarp - it makes a decent rain-fly for a 3-season tent, or added cover for a 4-season one or just sleeping on the ground. But it's not big enough to compete with a catenary or traditional square tarp for more sophisticated "just a tarp" or "tarp over hammock" setups. At the same time, it's big for a poncho. It can definitely cover a backpack, but because it can do that it looks a little goofy hauling it out for a parade or ball game.I would say this is best designed for a backpacker who wants a lightweight replacement for a rain coat that can be dual-purposed for a tarp when needed. That's what it's designed for, that's what it's best at, and if that's your need, it's a great choice.
