I brought the box inside, put it in the living room and noticed a slightly unpleasant smell. It took me a while to figure out where it was coming from and when I did I saw there was a puddle on the table I had put it on. On the lid was a piece of faucet. So I'm guessing it was broken and they knew about it, but they figured tapping it would be enough. The product itself was ready to use but I don't think it works. When we let the dog out he immediately went to the sorted splash area and sniffed it with interest. It didn't grab her at all. I haven't seen them dig yet, but I'd be surprised if it stays that way. And I highly doubt it will do much good. So I wouldn't buy it again.
