Review on ABI Tuna Blue LED Bulb: Enhancing Coral Reef Health with Optimized Spectrum PAR38 by Stephanie Smith

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Know what you will use it for!

I was trying to use this 12 watt Tuna Blue Par38 bulb to light my 6 gallon Pico Cube and the light was so intense it was painful to look at the aquarium. about 9 inches above the rim of the tank. Although the bulb worked great and looked like a quality bulb - hence the 5 stars - I returned it because I couldn't rationalize the use of the light over the saltwater tank so you can't see or rate your own aquarium! I don't know if it was because the bulb was too bright or because it was too blue (maybe a combination of both) but I'll tell you one thing. . If they could somehow make these lightbulbs dimmable that would solve all my problems! Testing this lamp has made me appreciate my planted aquariums a lot more! The warm, bright light in my planted tanks looked so pleasing to the eye and relaxing compared to the hard-on-the-eyes feeling this lamp produces. But if you plan to do either of the following two things, I still recommend buying it. a) Place it over an aquarium that is in a far corner of the room where you can see your aquarium from at least 6 feet away. B) Use exclusively for coral growing in a basement somewhere in your home where the focus is not on being able to watch or enjoy an aquarium. C) You're used to saltwater tanks and tall active lights, so you don't care (this bulb must have been for my first saltwater aquarium, so maybe my eyes aren't used to seeing those kinds of lights). ------ Update -- 02/06/21 So I gave it another try and this time bought a blue and white ABI bulb. 12W. The color spectrum of a blue and white bulb is much more pleasing to the eye (and less harsh on the eye) in my opinion. However, I noticed something else. I used to hang these bulbs lower above the tank, about 7-8 inches from the tank (although I said it was 9 inches - I think I measured it wrong). In any case, I hang this lantern closer to 12 inches. out of the tank, and the blinding feeling I got while watching the tank was reduced to a minimum. I think the light should bounce off the corners of my pico a lot more if the light is hung lower. My pico reef tank sits on my desk about a foot to the left of my computer where I sit and work, so it's important to have a flashlight that won't hurt my eyes at close range. I'm glad I was able to hang the lantern higher, about 12 inches (I use a RapidLED Par38 gooseneck) because the aquarium is now much easier to view and appreciate. 12" is definitely the right height to evenly distribute the rating for a 12" tank! What is the rating for 6 inches from the tank and 12 inches from the tank if you want to confirm what I'm saying? For now I'm happy with it and will update again in the future to let you know how the bulb is doing.
