Primary support is provided by two metal splints that curve down on either side of the thumb. They stop almost all movements of the thumb. The other two straps help stop lateral movement of the wrist. There is no splint on either the upper or lower arm, allowing the wrist to bend up and down. While it fits either hand, the left hand is better suited due to the direction the straps fold in for a secure fit. I wish the thumb strap was a little flexible - it doesn't stretch and was a little uncomfortable. For the price this brace seems well made and has helped me with a wrist injury so far as it involves lateral movement of my wrist. If the up and down movement is your main problem, this might not be the best solution.
