Amazing for the price

I'm a price conscious audiophile. When a device penetrates more than its own weight, I find it fascinating. If it stands out and is downright cheap, you've got my attention. This thing grabbed me and still won't let go. I'm not a big fan of Bluetooth. It's compressed, not incredibly detailed or realistic, and pretty damn comfortable. My reference system certainly doesn't have funk nonsense, but for music in other rooms I found it hard to justify not using it, so I went in search of a better-sounding but inexpensive Bluetooth DAC. I've tried a few cheaper devices and felt entirely justified in giving up Bluetooth in favor of a wired connection, but I persevered and eventually settled on what seemed to be the standard, the Audioengine b1. I was quite happy with that. It sounded pretty good, hooked up easily, and was suitable for background/non-critical listening. The resolution was just about ok, but it was quite musical and I kept it. The price new for it was in the $150 range. As a music lover, nothing is good enough for the long haul, but given that it's cheap I didn't think I'd find anything better for what I was willing to pay. I saw the BlueDento DAC on Amazon and was somewhat impressed with the performance for the price, about 1/3 of what I paid for the audio engine. Received it, hooked it up and was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. In short, when A/B comparing the same .wav files streamed from Kindle Fire or the same songs streamed from Spotify, I found that detail and resolution improved significantly when using the BlueDento device . . The audio engine may have sounded a bit warmer, but in my opinion the improvement heard through BlueDento was significant enough that I took out the audio engine and put it up for sale. I would say that in the sub $100 category you will struggle to find a better device. Buy, connect decent cables and enjoy music.
