We bought these to put in the mailbox for Christmas but put them on the mantel over the fireplace instead. In fact, I was a little concerned that they would be outside. They came with no instructions so I had to figure out how to open the battery compartment to put the batteries in. Once I figured that out (it wasn't immediately obvious or easy) they worked fine. There's a blinking setting and a non-flashing setting, but the blinking was pretty fast and awkward to look at (I don't like blinking lights anyway). The little switch you use to turn them on and off seems a bit . I do not know. Not exactly weak because it's pretty hard to slide into the on position. But it doesn't seem to be very long. But the lights adorned our robe for Christmas and my son (who is 10 years old) loved them. And while 30 lights (to me) sounds like a lot, the cord was the perfect length to match the width of the mantel. So remember that if you want to embellish something longer than a few meters, you can order multiple skeins.
