The USB-C port was never closed, as was the card slot. It worked just fine for about 5 months and then stopped working because the USB-C port didn't support the connection. I just ordered/received a $25 SanDisk reader, which worked like a charm and seems to have better build quality, not to mention faster speed. You get what you pay for.
