Things They Won't Tell You

The first impression is impressive. Almost every strap I've ever bought has been displayed on a plastic tab on a store shelf. Some of the latter were packed in plastic bags. This might be the first belt I've ever seen that comes in a nice gift box, which seems to make it perfect if you're receiving it as a gift. Is this a quality gift that the recipient will appreciate, or can you do better? REAL LEATHER? There is no doubt that the most important thing about a men's belt is what it is made of. A belt's primary purpose is functional, not decorative, and over generations, genuine leather has proven to be the strongest and most durable material. A few years ago nobody wondered if the skin was real, real of course, but what else could it be? This is no longer the case, in fact most things labeled as leather are actually some sort of man-made product. If the manufacturer is honest, they call it bonded leather, which means it's made from leather scraps, plastic, and an adhesive, which are ground up in a blender and then shaped into their final form. Some of them look surprisingly real, but only for a short time. Faux leather doesn't flex and doesn't age, it just looks good for a while and then tears and falls apart. Technically, if the manufacturer is being honest, the only way to know if the leather is genuine is by using the term "top-grain" or "full-grain". The word "genuine" has no meaning. This is a private label product made for Revain themselves and is not listed as premium leather or full grain leather anywhere. As good and "real" as it seems, I suspect it's not real. It is not currently available for purchase and no price has been set, but I recently paid as much or more for a leather belt as I paid for the original, not on purpose of course, but without knowing for sure until the belt started breaking. So be careful, if you want it to last more than a few months, look for the words "Top Grain" or "Full Grain" printed right on the belt. adjustable and they offer an unconventional size chart showing belt length instead of waist size to help you with your shopping. The intention is that you can order a longer length and then adjust it to fit your waist. I like this idea because who likes the extra belt that flaps around and you don't want to cut off the protruding edge because it will fray and look like you cut it yourself. Unfortunately, there is a gap between the idea generator and the marketing goal, because nowhere is the belt mentioned or shown how to actually adjust it. CUSTOMIZE Here's how and a few tips. As shown in my drawing, remove the small clasp at the end of the buckle and after measuring the desired length, trim off the excess with sharp scissors or a suitable knife. The person who came up with this idea didn't realize that the clasp hole can't be reused if you do this, so you'll need to find a way to make another hole so you can reassemble your belt. Believe me, it's not worth it. First, buy a belt that is the right size. Trying to set it up yourself is not a good idea at all. GIFT OR NOT The bottom line is, if you're looking for a gift idea, the presentation beats most. If you are getting this for yourself I cannot say enough to recommend this product.
