Review on Toshiba PA3542U-2PRP Dynadock USB Laptop Docking Station with DVI Port - Streamline Your Connectivity and Enhance Productivity by Jhon Clark

Does the job (if a bit pricey)

As a comment on some of the previous reviews, as of January 2009 the Dynadock U version (latest version) works fine with my Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista 64-bit. a system with full Vista Home Premium features (Aero, etc.) and full video capabilities on an external monitor (my test: running a full AVI movie from my laptop via dynadock on a connected 17" external monitor); Video playback was good, with minimal, if any, image degradation and no video stuttering (note: I didn't have any other CPU-intensive operations running at the same time other than a few open IE windows). I couldn't find any other external docks that work with 64-bit Vista. I think the problem might still be setting separate resolutions for the laptop monitor and the external monitor so each one looks good/better apparently, especially in mirrored display mode. Or maybe I just don't care. This seems to be a common problem with external monitors that are a different size than the laptop monitor, again mostly in mirror mode. In the end, it seems that Dynadock U is the best option for its purposes. If only the RRP wasn't as high as it is now (but sometimes there are discounts). Please note that older dynadocks, VGA and DVI models have problems with 64-bit Windows. The Vista 64-bit display driver was released earlier this month, but the dynadock software itself hadn't been updated when I last checked; This means that while an external monitor may work fine with the new display driver, the docking station's ethernet and serial ports do not appear to work with Vista 64-bit. It is unclear whether Toshiba will update the software in light of the launch of the Dynadock U (new) version. (And previous information from Toshiba indicated that the VGA and DVI versions were not compatible with 64-bit Vista.)
