I live in a rural area with several neighbors and I share the cost of a dumpster as a solution to the problem of not having a good garbage collection service and have done so for several years. We had a few issues with intruders and unauthorized use, but nothing major. For some inexplicable reason (although I'd bet it's related to the opioid crisis) this has become a BIG problem. The trash can was regularly abused. On at least two occasions it was so crowded that legitimate users couldn't use it. This is visible to at least 2 homeowners and we all stayed awake trying to catch people in the act but never did. We even searched the bags several times (dumpster diving) and found mail (and empty OxyContin bottles) by name. The sheriff's deputy was repeatedly called. MPs did go to these houses and people refused to use the bin (as they should) but we thought the prospect of being charged with burglary would put them off. It's not like this. We set up trail cameras, identified one person, but the magistrate refused to issue warrants. I bought this fake camera. I mounted it on a pole that I placed opposite the dumpster and about 10 feet from the pole. A black wire is run the full length of the pole, going into the ground. I installed an electrical junction box under the fake chamber, ran a wire through the box and into a piece of conduit that also goes into the ground. It gives the distinct impression that the wire on the pole (whatever it may be) runs underground and feels on top of the camera tripod to provide power. Since I installed the camera, there hasn't been a single case of trespassing or unauthorized use! In four months we have already earned more than my money was worth, and perhaps saved many a perpetrator from pain with the pills.
