So I scraped the wrong parts of this tool together for a few minutes before realizing what the problem was. The steel colored part with a hole in it is NOT a striker - you're looking for a part attached to it that looks like a tiny rusty I-beam. Hold it as in the photo - with one of the flared edges against the shaft - press down hard enough to feel it bite, and scrape *quickly* all the way down. I found that once it started moving I had to decrease the pressure a bit if I wanted to get more sparks. Once you get the angle and pressure right (and use the right parts) it's easy to use - and I've never used anything like this before, so I'm hardly an expert. Don't even try to refer to useless instructions that are as clear as a Rorschach blob. I'm willing to bet that most of the commenters who couldn't get it to work made the same mistake I made in the beginning. Note: I have small hands, even for a woman. If you have huge paws, this *might* not be the best tool for you. Otherwise it is worth more than 6€.
