Persistent strong penetrating smell of paint

I always laugh at people who write reviews and say something smells 'finished'. But when I opened these shoes, I smelled a strong smell, similar to felt-tip pens. No problem except I bought these shoes because they said real leather. In the end, we will go for faux leather Walmart loafers. Cheaper and smells better. Also, these shoes are insanely stiff and don't flex. Looks terribly uncomfortable. Pretty disappointed all round.
