Review on Skirt Day Sewing Create Skirts by Carol Miller

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Wow! Not just skirt patterns, but sewing workshops too!

Kindle version is $2.50 for 28 skirt patterns. The ideas cover the entire range of styles, from youthful to classic style. Many (not all) can suit any age from teens to seniors with simple adjustments to hem length and/or fabric choice. Very good collection. There is a lot of basic information about designing clothes, tools for hand sewing, ironing, a catalog of machine needles and how to choose the right needle for a particular fabric, types of thread, various basic drawing tools and their uses. , cutting instructions, self-measurement - many, many, many good instructions and information with large, clear illustrations and photos. I think a determined beginner could self-teach based on the information provided, but having access to a mentor (check out older women who have been sewing for decades and are happy to share their experiences) will speed up the learning process and minimize mistakes. A beginner with some design experience is more likely to create wearable clothes. Skirt patterns are not classified by difficulty, and some of the patterns may be too difficult for the inexperienced. If you've never made clothes before, I would suggest starting with either a straight skirt ("pencil skirt") or, if you're a bit "hippie" like a pear shape, an A-line skirt. Each of these will teach you (in addition to creating a simple pattern) straight seams, sewing a waist tie, inserting a zipper, hem and of course fitting. And that's more than enough for the first project. The Kindle version has a few issues in several places, but all pages are accessible. I usually use Kindle for PC for study guides to enlarge illustrations and images to their maximum size. A small slider allows you to painlessly move back and forth between where the pages "stick". I can't imagine using this book on a standard Kindle or smaller Fire. Such books are perfect for the Kindle app for PC. I didn't deduct a star for this edition - the sheer volume of information outweighs the sticky page issue.
