Review on πŸ“š Lineco Heavy Duty Book Binding Awl with Fine Point and Wooden Ball Handle - Ideal for Projects (870-821) by Barbara Simmons

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Nice fake, as expected.

I like this awl but that's because the reviews let me know it might not be a top notch tool. It looks like it was made in a shop in Pakistan (made in Pakistan), the shank is not quite centered and not sharpened properly. The tip is not at all the same as in the photo but much more like an ice axe. The ballpoint pen is a bit rough as other reviewers have pointed out. But from a professional point of view it works well enough just because it has a good design. I can resharpen the tip thinner in the deeper broach area, making it easier to pierce more sheets of paper. The spherical handle and short awl provide good control and allow for a little pressure. I've made good holes in 12-16 sheets of paper with no problems. What I like about this tool is what others don't like. It has a pleasant homely atmosphere. I have a feeling that an awl could just be an awl and that the differences aren't all that great. If anyone knows of an original and it's a cheap fake please comment and let me know - I'd love to see something like this with a surgical tip in a photo although it doesn't really matter. As a beginner I don't know that well. In fact, I punched about 50 sheets with a narrow nail on an anvil, leaving a large hole on one side of the booklet (Japanese stapled through), but it wasn't visible.

Pros
  • Punch holes to ease sewing
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
