So I bought this thing for my poor husband's NAS and loaded 4 x 1TB 5400rpm hard drives into it. First, the fan is quite noisy. Too loud for 24/7 work in the living room. With no fan and even with the cover removed, my Seagate drives got very hot under heavy loads, over 55 degrees Celsius, enough to cause a SMART error. With the lid closed and the fan running, they drop to 30, which is quite normal. even colder than really necessary. I replaced the fan with this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FBPQQR4 which reduced the noise significantly; Discs under heavy loads now reach up to 43 degrees Celsius and only 39 degrees with a spacer (I used a penny) between the base and cover to allow more airflow. The fan was very easy to replace with 4 screws accessible from the bottom of the fan case. I wish Sabrent had installed a quieter fan from the factory. According to Google research, the temperature range of 30 to 40 degrees Celsius is ideal for hard drives, so I'm happy with that now. Temperature and fan noise aside, another issue I have with this product is the lack of UASP support. would give me a bit more performance in my use case, especially when reading. Overall I'm very happy with the product for the price considering my use case.
