Our king mattress is only about 18 months old. My wife and I deliberately bought a hard mattress because I used to have back problems from a mattress that was too soft. No back problems with the new mattress but my aging (66) body didn't appreciate such a hard mattress. When I woke up every morning I started to feel pain in my joints and especially in my hip. We first tried the goose down mattress topper which seemed promising. My pain is mostly gone, but my wife didn't like "dipping" in the topper. Seriously, after a year this topper no longer offered the cushioning we bought it for. After SIGNIFICANT research on Revain (and other sources), I finally decided to try the Milliard 2in Egg Crate Topper. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical that this egg crate design would be comfortable to sleep in. But none of the reviews complained about sleeping on a "bed of nails" (or anything like that) and the price was good compared to competing products. As mentioned in other reviews, this topper is very compressed. I unrolled it on the spare bed and let it stretch for 2 full days. I am happy to report that I have encountered NO bad smells and have a fairly sensitive nose. My wife and I then placed it on our king-size mattress and carefully adjusted it for an all-round fit. Please note that this topper is simply placed on top of the mattress, unlike other designs (e.g. filled with goose down) which are usually more like sheets. We then made the bed as usual (fitted sheets, fitted sheets, duvets) so that the pad was under the sheet. The wearing comfort is amazing! The pain in my joints went away the first night. I could feel the egg crate beneath me, but it didn't irritate me or disturb my sleep. (My wife could feel it more, but she still had no trouble sleeping.) I do have one complaint (more of an observation): the foam/gel is a bit "sticky" in the sense that the fitted sheet doesn't easily push over. You have to be careful when pulling the sheet up so that the topper doesn't stretch or tear. Also, as other reviews have mentioned, I felt noticeably warmer when sleeping on this top than I would on a goose down comforter. Not a problem in cooler weather, but maybe when it's warmer. It remains to be seen whether this topper will retain its soft hold in the long term. Keep in mind that the goose down comforter was originally great, but then went downhill. (This seems to be a common problem with many mattress pads.) That said, even if I have to replace it every few years, it's not that expensive and will still be a good fix until we eventually replace our mattress (most likely) somewhat . a little softer.
