Very practical for use around the house. 1200 joules is enough to protect most devices (1000-2000 joules recommended) from power surges, but of course a direct lightning strike can probably fry something on the power line it's running on. They're heavier than I expected for their size, but that's a good thing as they're solidly built and of excellent quality. I never thought about it until I read the review but they work great for automatic garage door openers to protect them.
