these trekking poles are very easy to use. It looks like it has a high strength cable inside to pull the bottom 2 sections in place when the bars are extended. Haven't had a chance to use the cleats yet, but the rubber foot provides good traction on hard surfaces and the spike is great for trails in my area. Mud is very full of clay. A few weeks ago I was on a moderate trail and the only thing I had to walk with was my monopod. This prompted me to find a hiking pole or two as the camera monopod is almost useless for hiking. A few days ago I walked the same trails with trekking poles and it was much easier for me to move through the wooded area with them. Overall this is a very good and durable pair of hiking poles.
