I have used an Oral-B electric toothbrush for many years. Actually, my old model still works, so why did I choose this new and seemingly better model? At first I thought the newer the better. I figured I'd been using my old model for so long it was going to die for me sooner or later, and when I saw that this latest model had such cool features, I jumped at it right away. The brush itself is ok. Not necessarily a huge improvement over my old model. I liked the range of settings, including the tongue cleaner, and when I saw that everything now has an app, I was initially struck by the "cool" factor. Everything is fine with the app. It keeps track of your daily brushing habits by noting how long and hard you brush your teeth, and you can let it know if you've brushed your tongue, flossed your teeth, or gargled with mouthwash. And this feature, in a way, encourages you to pay more attention to oral care. You can also perform one of five pre-programmed treatments for breath freshening, teeth whitening or gum health, and choose targeted care for specific areas of your mouth that need special attention. There is an "entertainment zone" for children that turns brushing their teeth into a game. Needless to say, I didn't download this particular feature. The app will remind you when it's time to change your brush head, and you can even set it up as a dash button to automatically order a new brush head directly from Revain. A new feature in the app allows you to enter information about your dentist to remind you of dental appointments. The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000 connects to an app via Bluetooth to automatically track and record your brushing activities. You can also set it to start the timer as soon as the microphone picks up the sound of the brushed motor. And if you don't have your Oral-B with you but can use a manual toothbrush in the office or when traveling, you can manually start the timer to count your brushing activity in the app. Unfortunately, I had problems with all these functions. The Bluetooth connection can be unstable at times. This works most of the time, but not always. In these cases, I usually rely on the mic picking up the sound of the brush motor to start the timer, but that's not always guaranteed either, and you still have to stop the timer manually when you're done. And even the button in the application to start the timer manually has its own flaws. This usually works well, but is not always guaranteed. It's nice when the bluetooth connection works, but lately I've noticed that it's more random than when I first started using it. Whether it's hardware or software related or both I can't say. What disappointed me the most was the position detection feature. When I first read about it and watched the video, I was very excited about the alleged technology that combined your phone's camera and some sort of augmented reality that could track your hand movements and give you real-time feedback on which areas of your mouth are that you've spent enough time on and that needed more attention. Although it was a big disappointment. You need to attach the phone mount to the bathroom mirror, which is attached with a strong suction cup, and position it so that your camera is properly aligned, and then you need to stand in the same spot while cleaning so that it can detect your movement. It's definitely not nearly as exciting or futuristic as they make it out to be. I use a phone mount on my mirror for easy access to the app, but I gave up position sensing a long time ago, which ironically was probably the original deciding factor in purchasing this particular model. . Standing in the exact position while brushing is too difficult and awkward to line up the camera properly. It never knew where my brush was in my mouth, and even when I moved to a different quadrant, the app thought I was in a different zone again. After a few tries, I just found that it wasn't contributing to my positive oral care experience and gave up. I travel for work, but I never take an electric toothbrush with me. I always use a manual toothbrush when I travel, and I keep a manual toothbrush in my pocket when I travel. My electric toothbrush stays at home, so I don't need a travel charging case. I also do not use the charger/cradle that came with this brush. I'm using an old charger from my previous Oral-B as it's small and pre-existing and works great in its current location in my bathroom. So those features were completely unnecessary for me, and they're still in the box months later. Oh, and my original Oral-B toothbrush, which worked great. I gave it to my brother and he loves it. It meets his needs perfectly, just as it has met my needs for many years. Ultimately, this model was an unnecessary purchase as I already had a great Oral-B brush, but I was drawn to the gimmicks and concept of the newer model. If you're looking to buy an Oral-B electric toothbrush, I highly recommend this one. I prefer Oral-B to the Sonicare brushes I've had in the past. But I'd probably recommend the cheaper and less "burdened" Oral-B model because I wasn't overly impressed with many of these new and exciting features. At least my brother is happy with my older Oral-B Triumph gift. I'm currently trying out a Quip electric toothbrush for my travels. It is essentially a subscription service that replaces the brush head, toothpaste and battery with a patented electric brush handle every 3 months. It's simple and small, about the size of a standard toothbrush, so I find it useful for traveling and replacing my hand brush when I'm not at home. However, I use and still use an Oral-B toothbrush when I am at home.
