Preparing a cold drink is very easy - put some water and coffee grounds in a container and wait. So why spend over $40 on plastic? Because the system makes it very convenient. The bucket is designed for a full pound of coarsely ground coffee. It doesn't seem like much, but it's great because you use a full can of coffee every time and don't have to constantly have leftover coffee grounds. The next thing I like about this thing is the cleaning. There's a cookie-sized felt disc filter that sits at the bottom of the bucket, and then a large filter paper bag that holds the set, and I highly recommend you use both. Finally, the glass carafe included in the set is excellent as it is made of glass and sealed airtight. If you're a creative person you can probably make something that does the same job for half the money, but I find this system really worth the effort.
