I bought 5 iPad holders to compare for my app (musician gigs): The Gig Easy, The Caddy Buddie, The Neewer, Talent iClaw/iMS and Jam Stand Ultimate reviewed here. The criteria are exactly what you would expect: tough enough to withstand accidental drops and bumps in a gig bag, compact enough to fit in a gig bag, and capable of 3-axis rotation. This jam stand exceeded all expectations. The support rails and latches are plastic and aren't as strong as they could be, but they detach from the extension so they can lie very flat, flat enough that with some care you can position them between your gear to survive . The rails are quite spongy but flexible enough that I think they will take a few drops. The rest of the device is well built and has two joints that work together to allow movement in three axes.
