Smells like a nasty spice

I've used wooden-handled horsehair brushes on my rectangular jugs for many years. They are really good at removing ice tea stains on glass. I thought I'd try. When I used it for the first time, I smelled a spicy odor and it was not comfortable for me. So I scrubbed it with different products (some castile soap, lemon juice, vinegar, finally bleach) but the smell didn't go away. I even tried washing a lot of different things with it, but the smell only got worse (like the armpit smell of a person who eats spicy food and doesn't use deodorant, to be honest - if you like that smell, maybe I like ). Back to horse hair for me.
