I've had a lot of experience with cartridge ink calligraphy pens and expected them to be like everyone else. I planned this as a gift and wanted to set it up so my boyfriend (to-be) could just start writing. Others have commented on ink starting difficulties and they were NOT kidding! I found it almost impossible to start the ink cartridges in a pen by inserting them and twisting the pen together. I ended up having to find a small pen and hammer it into the cartridge to break the seal and get the ink flowing. This is something I've probably done 100+ times with other pen sets as well, and I can attest that this set is indeed unusually difficult to get started with. As a note to other "new" users of this type of pen, depressing the cartridge is not the easiest way to launch such a pen. IMHO the easiest way is to put a few drops of water on the back of the pen.
