An external zipped pocket on one side does not take up the full length of the bag but is sufficient for all of the above tasks. On the other side is another external zippered pocket, large enough to hold a small 3-ring binder or 8.5 x 11 inch paper (see somewhat as advertised, but there is a bit more room around the edges ( see photo) The detail I've included shows the inner pocket that the laptop sits in. Fits when the pen is up (I took the photo with the case upside down but it shows extra space if you Put your MacBook in) to use as a scratching post, so I have to be careful where I put it in. Anyway, for under $20 you really can't go wrong with this case.
