I used one of these to make an adapter from a lamp socket to a grounded socket. The ground is not connected, but the extra pin helps keep the end of the extension cord in the outlet and prevents it from being pulled out. This is important if you have an overhead light and an 8ft extension hanging down trying to unplug the connector (the end of the cord) from the adapter.
