I have a Columbia Alpine Action jacket that I really like. I'm a big fan of the Omni-Heat insulation and this is just a great winter coat. I also have an Omni-Heat Crested Butte II jacket that I wear under a Gore-Tex shell when it gets really wet and cold. Anyway, my teenage son needed a winter coat and wanted a coat without the bulky insulation, so I started looking into Columbia's various Omni-Heat offerings. I was thinking of buying him an Alpine Action coat but then I saw that the Whirlibird had a removable liner and zippers which Alpine Action didn't have so thought it might be worth a try. Seems to be a pretty good jacket and my son is happy with it. The only minor downside is that the main zip is a bit small/light. Holds up well, but I like to see something heavier than the main zipper on a ski coat. There is a star deduction for that. Otherwise it's a good coat at a very reasonable price, and the vents and removable liner make it a great option for changeable weather.
