I have a laptop that I need to use in two places. Connecting and disconnecting an Ethernet cable is a hassle; It's a very thin HP, and the ethernet port actually has a spring-loaded hinge that often doesn't want to let go of the cable. I also have a wired keyboard and mouse at every location. Mini dock with ethernet port that I can leave anywhere, just plug in power and USB and get everything I need. For this purpose it works. I don't see any overheating issues, but I'm only using 100Mbit ethernet, not Gbps. I've only been using them for a few weeks so I can't comment on how reliable they are over the long term. However, they all worked out of the box. And for this Windows 10 laptop, I didn't have to explicitly install any drivers for it to work. It took the laptop about 30 seconds to understand that everything was connected, figure out the situation with the drivers and. everything worked.
