We bought this for stairs and it is NOT 100% safe. The extension pins fit freely in the main door frame. When you tighten it, the seam where the extension and main closure meet will bulge with a little pressure. If you have a toddler bumping into the gate or swinging it back and forth (like we do) there is a risk of the gate falling off. If you pull the gate too hard, it will not open. So my husband JB welded the pin holes to make the gate more secure. For the lower floor, this is a perfectly fine gate. It would also be fine at the top of the stairs if there was no pressure on the extension piece. Be careful when placing a hyper baby at the top of the stairs.
