OEM cartridges are great in terms of quality, but HP scares you into buying them.
I read that they can lock your printer for a firmware update if you don't use their cartridges so I keep paying for them. But I will not buy another HP laser printer. I compared the cost of OEM cartridges and it turned out that Brother and other cartridges are much cheaper. More importantly, while I haven't tested all other laserjets, it looks like other manufacturers won't block your printer unless you're using OEM cartridges. It was a deal breaker for me even though the quality of the printer is great.
