I have owned and used this slicer for over 10 years. I have an old model and I've honestly worn it out, even glued some parts together. When I decided to buy a new one, especially a newer model, I carefully read the reviews, watched the videos on the site, and zoomed in on the picture here on Revain. I bought and received the new model in record time, may I add. Here is my best advice after successful use and remember this is my personal opinion not necessarily shared by the company. First, gently wipe excess oil off the blade with a paper towel and rotate the blade until all is wiped off. I did this every time I changed the blade. The blade is very stiff when first opened and has to be moved to release it from its packing position. I've never seen the need for extra oil when cutting, but I can see why it could be in extra sets of blades and a new cutter. After cleaning the blade and running it a few times on the fabric, the blade should come loose and roll smoothly. Now I can easily cut multiple layers of fabric. If your new cutter comes with a defective blade, try a different blade before making a decision. Since most of the negative complaints were related to loose springs, pinching the ends with needle-nosed pliers to tighten them, or dab of superglue on each end might also help. Mine never came off. Knowing how to keep the angle of the blade square will also prevent you from going over or running off the edge of the ruler. There's a learning curve to using it properly, but by changing the way you apply pressure, you can cut perfectly even while seated. My only negative comment is how you change the blade. While there aren't as many parts to remove as with Olfa etc, it's still difficult to undo and remove a screw, especially contrary to anything you've ever learned. My 2 cents.
