Common sense plays a big part in the installation of this product. I lengthened the hook as much as possible. I then opened the vents slightly so I could slide the hook up before slowing the hook's descent and locking the vent in place. By holding it, I was able to tighten it. I used the larger magnetic plate that came with the package and was able to slip the phone into the case comfortably. The magnet is strong. I accidentally drove into a pothole and my phone didn't fly off. You don't want to over-tighten this holder, and you don't want to just pop it in or you'll damage the product or your vents. This is the best car phone mount I have ever bought :-]]
