Smoker Insulation

My Tilman welding blanket is just what I was looking for for my grilling needs. I have a smoker that isn't the thickest steel on the market. So when it gets cold or windy, I always see the temperature drop. On a sunny day I can hold 250 degrees, but on cold, windy days I get lucky when I hit 200 degrees. So I didn't need insulation in my smokehouse, so I explored ideas for outdoor insulation. I wanted an insulating coating without fiberglass because I was concerned that small particles of fiberglass could get into the flesh. After doing my research I liked the Tilman welding blanket because it is fiberglass free and can withstand very high temperatures around the firebox which can reach 550 degrees if I add a lot of wood at once. I simply covered my smoker (not the firebox) with a blanket and was able to restore the immersion temperature to stay constant at 250 degrees. The material doesn't feel that thick, but it does wonders for maintaining a constant temperature; if you know how to control the burning rate of coals. I wish they could create cutouts for different sized grills in the future so they fit perfectly. I have to adjust the ceiling every time I open and close the smoking doors because there is nothing to attach it to. I don't really care as I very rarely open my smoker doors occasionally, I don't want to blow out that good smoke and kill my consistent temperature. The Tilman Welding Blanket is great when you have temperature swings and are looking for extra insulation for non-heavy industrial steel grills/smokers.
