If you can't tell from the picture my betta is a bit lazy and likes to lounge around most of the day. So any current that exceeds the ripple can actually strain them a bit. I used them to confuse the filter output and they worked great. They also serve as secondary filters and can catch quite a bit of dirt and debris as it re-enters the tank. So I flush them regularly and replace them every few months. Before these sponges appeared, my betta was under constant stress. Now he will live with comfort to old age :)
