Review on Enhance Your Home Lighting Controls with Leviton DDMX1 BLZ Decora Bluetooth Universal by Chris Russell

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good performance but poor power management at maximum dimming

Media could not be loaded. I use this dimmer in two places, bedroom and living room. I had a device fail which made it undetectable via Bluetooth, but I replaced it and the replacement works fine. Every time you open the app, BT needs to pair your mobile device with the Switch. It's a bit annoyingly slow process. I believe this is not necessarily 100% the product's fault and may be partly due to performance limitations in the BT protocol and stack, but it would be nice if it were smoother. My biggest complaint is the fluctuations in brightness and the limited ability of dimmable LED downlights. My living room has 8 recessed LED lights. They used to be on a Lutron Maestro electronic dimmer, which worked flawlessly and could dim down to very low levels with very minimal dimming fluctuation. I "upgraded" to Leviton because I wanted to control Bluetooth from my iPhone, but unfortunately that was a mistake. Leviton cannot dim as low as Lutron. And what's worse, when Leviton is on its lowest dimming level, fluctuations in the brightness of the lighting (with a period of maybe 10 seconds) are very noticeable and annoying. It's very distracting from TV or anything else. The lowest dimming level is not only not very good, but also not usable at all due to the loss of brightness control. The dimmer should be one to two levels brighter than the minimum setting to significantly reduce fluctuations. This project requires an improvement in electronics quality and energy management, at least as far as maintenance of the LED lighting is concerned. =-=-=-=-= -=-=-=-=-=-14. April 2017: I am changing this review. I no longer see brightness ripple at the lowest dimming level. Very idiosyncratic. At first it was extremely pronounced, but now it's absent. Upgrading my rating to 4 stars because of this initial issue and because it doesn't fall on the low end of a Lutron Maestro (although it has many more features like BT control and a timer). =-=-=-= -=-=-=-=-=17. April 2017: Brightness oscillations are back with a vengeance at the minimum brightness setting. It drives 6 built-in LED lights. Attached is a photo of the lightbulb. I'll try to attach a video showing the oscillations. Have attached a video. That is very pronounced in a human being. The video even seems to be able to highlight fluctuations in brightness.

Pros
  • Single pole or 3-position/multi-position control when used with DD00R-DL Decora Digital Remote Dimmer (sold separately)
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
