We visited several pet stores to check the gates ourselves. We found this gate and it matched our measurements for the base of the stairs. But a big chain store wanted $90 for it, and I always check the prices. It was almost half the price online and since we are the main contributors I was able to get it. 2 days later without extra shipping and if you don't like it, you can return it without any problems! I ordered it so our dogs wouldn't go upstairs but wanted something our 2 boys (4 and 9) could easily open. The store only had the white version and when I ordered I was delighted to see the bronze version for just a few dollars more. The bronze looks so pretty! It looks like it belongs to our home, not an additional outbuilding! We put the gate on the first step and go up the stairs. It was very easy to install once we understood how the gate works. We used both extensions at the base of our stairs and did NOT use cups or anything like that. Just insert the grid and tighten until everything was even! Just tighten everything. We thought we had gone too far. But just keep going! In the end he will arrive at the right place! We liked that all 4 sides could be adjusted separately as we have moldings at the bottom of our walls and this has been an issue with other gates. We loved that the gate closes on its own as our boys would probably leave it open, and that it can be locked in the open position if we do a lot of walking up and down the stairs! We also liked the locking system, we can keep it turned so that the gate closes but doesn't lock. Then the gate just has to be opened and it closes again! We liked this gate so much we bought a 2nd to keep dogs out of the laundry room (where the cat box is). The second installation was easier than the first! It only took us about 15 minutes to get exactly what we wanted! We highly recommend this gate!
