I think they're probably pretty leak proof if you close the lids all the way. You have to push them all the way around, even the middle tabs, to fully secure them. Once on, it's quite difficult to take them off. Disappointing as I bought these for my young children. My 6 year old can handle it but my 3 year old needs help getting the lids off the containers. Also, they smelled horribly when I unpacked them and I doubt how safe that plastic really is. But as long as they're good, until we can invest in something better. I love that I can pack a week's worth of school lunches on Sunday and keep them in the fridge all week! And I love that they can be washed in the dishwasher. However, I wouldn't recommend using your dishwasher's heated dryer function on them. I would worry about melting them.
