Works great on 5V. for Novelty Lighting
Ordered these and used them in a Halloween costume that runs off a 5v battery and they worked great. Musical responsiveness was great for our use. Then I tried to reuse them in a PC case and connect them to 12V because the top of the control box says "5-12V Input". All the lights got a different color and then only 3 bulbs in the strip were lit. Switching back to 5V didn't help. Trying to power the strip directly without a 5V control box gives the same result. So the control box can take 12 volts, but what it puts out will burn out the light bar. So if you only run it on 5 volts it will work fine, but don't connect it to 12 volts even if it says it can.
