The stem is square (not round) which some reviews don't change the shape of the curl but it does. At the top of the curls (at the hairline), the shape of the curls is strikingly square. The middle and bottom sections of the curls look amazing, but styling the square section (closest to my head) was tricky. I tried a few different techniques and just couldn't get past this square look at the base. I have very fine straight hair so maybe someone with more textured hair would have a better result.
