update After 1 year and 3 months of use: the smell remains. When the garage has been aired out for a few months, I keep a bad air sponge in the closet with a bag of activated charcoal. The bad smell never goes away and makes the whole room smell bad. I put it in my hole and I'll find a way to get rid of it. Bad smell. We had it in our guest room for a while and it wasn't kept much in it. Every time I entered the guest room there was a strange smell in the room which I used with all sorts of air purifiers etc. I finally found that when I opened the closet there was a horrible smell inside. I've rubbed it again with all sorts of sanitary napkins and nothing really works. This product makes a great gift for someone you don't like.
