My waist measurement (the smallest point I can wear a belt) is 31 inches, which is high for small and low for medium, so I ordered both to compare. The small size is about 38 inches. Total length (excluding buckle) and average length is 43 inches. The small belt definitely suits my small waist; I would use a hole in the middle of the area. However, it would be too small to sit lower on my hips where I sometimes wear a belt (my hips go up to 41 inches). The middle belt is too big for my 31 inch waist (pictured) - I have to cut another hole. However, I will leave this one to wear lower on my hips. So my sizing advice is this: consider where you wear your belt and if you are at the ends of the measurement ranges, size up for versatility! I'm thinking of shortening the entire belt by removing the buckle.
