Review on πŸ”Š Klipsch R-1650-C In-Ceiling Speaker - White | Superior Audio Quality by Dawn Webster

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Tin sound, solid frame

I'm no pro, but over the years I've installed dozens of in-ceiling speakers in homes, friends and family - mostly quiet and mid-range options. I took them to extend the background sound in another room in my house where Polk Rcis are mostly installed. The shelves sound great but the price has gone up lately so I gave them a try for a rarely used space. These speakers have a very strong and rigid frame. Much better than other speakers in their current sub-50 price range and better than the in-ceiling speakers I've spent 2 or 3 times on. The latches almost didn't bend, didn't interfere with installation, and held up my thick plaster ceiling with ease. The only downside to the setup was that the grilles were very difficult to install. Unfortunately I didn't find the sound quality very good. I don't know how anyone can justify their list price with top options like this, but under $100 for a pair, they're fine. Cheap Pyles and acoustic speakers sound fuller and less harsh than those budget Klipschs, but the surrounds are so flimsy. Bass is never great with ceiling speakers, but it's almost non-existent with them. The tweeter sounds harsh and the mids are swollen, muddying the vocals. They seem more suited to low level background instruments like Muzak. I'll try some rear boxes and see if that improves the low frequency response. As mentioned, they don't have a real crossover, just a capacitor on the tweeter, like woofers in cars. For me, given the current price, this is not critical. I have used ceiling speakers with similar characteristics for background music with good results.

Pros
  • In-Ceiling and In-Wall Speakers
Cons
  • boring packaging
