Toyota startup rattle on 2.5L 4 cyl

I am a master level ASE Technitian that currently works at a dealership. I came across the Cam Phaser rattle issue fixing a car. There is a TSB and service instructions for this issue. The cam timing gear looses its oil and is empty on startup then rattles until it fills. UpdateYears later, my wife buys a 2014 Camry with the 2.5L 4 cyl with Dual VVT. Yes, it rattles. SO, I used this product (saw it on a tech car show). It quieted the rattle and shortened the duration of rattle at startup. What I am really trying to do is stretch the time before I have to change the intake side camshaft gear that is variable (oil operated). Yes, it did postpone that repair. NOW, I bought a 2015 RAV4. Same engine and trans as my wife, same rattle at startup. (Both cars bought in the 70,000 mile range). For my car, I put it in the first oil change. I drive 2,000 miles a month and I get 31.5 MPG in a small SUV, mostly highway. Did this stufff help my car? I dunno, BUT it is proven in my wife's car and because of that, I am running it. It shortened startup rattle on both vehicles, so I am buying time. I am just trying to protect what we have.UPDATE 9-7-20. I have used the product, over time, about every third oil change so I am about on my third bottle with this car (I am at 80,000 miles right now). I put this stuff in about 3 days ago with my oil change. There is no cam gear / phaser rattle on start up. At all. On a cold engine start, sitting in the parking lot at the start for the ride home, a rattle was guaranteed. Nope, rattle is currently gone. It is such a little thing, mostly I am just trying to reduce friction and just slow down wear to extend life for more mileage. No rattle on start just surprisingly a pleasant thing to have. Happy.

Pros
  • this product really works worth the money it is worth from my own experience
Cons
  • Might not be compatible with certain types of engine oil
