FOR KIDS BIKES ONLY – Robust design, very stable

EDIT: FITS KIDS BIKES, NOT SUITABLE FOR ADULT BIKES. Will not fit my road bike or my wife's road bike, she is 5ft 6" and her bike will not fit. Draw your own conclusions. Great for kids bikes. A 20" kids bike that it's perfect for. The trunk is adjustable so it could be lengthened if needed, but the short roof of my 13 Chevy Volt limited the length (before the sunroof hit it). The bar rests on many overlapping ones holes. So if you need a longer bar, just select the more widely spaced holes and insert the screw.I tested an adult bike before shortening it for my roof and it seemed to me that my Road bike (6ft, adult male) would fit well.I ordered 2 cases at a time, *Sporttrack and Swagman* - ($48).The Sportrack is noticeably heavier, stronger and the overall quality is just better. This is a quality rack with bold paint and heavy materials. My sportrack came in an open box ($22!) claiming it was missing hardware (which I totally overlooked or I wouldn't have ordered it).It came partially assembled, in perfect condition, with no hardware defects. Win! What's Good: Sturdy, heavy, high-quality materials. The mounting hardware is solid and the U-bolts are rubber covered. After installation, there will be no movement, and I will have no hesitation in making a trip across the country tomorrow. My kids bikes were reliable for 2-3 hour rides, over bumps, corners, up to 80mph. Reliable! What's bad: The clamp uses a screw that is too short. So when you open the clamp to release the bike's frame for assembly/disassembly, the grip sometimes unexpectedly releases. You have to be aware of the limiting end of the pinch grip to avoid this, which seems like a big oversight and a little annoying and easy to avoid. I bet I could just replace the screw if I really wanted it for under $2. Once you've loaded the bike 1-2 times you quickly realize the limits and it's not a big deal, I don't want to overstate this point. The clip material that actually touches your bike is hard plastic. Stupid stupid stupid. I didn't notice any scratches, but my children's bikes have already done a few kilometers. The clip should be rubber to avoid scratches, but you can always just stick 3M tape on the area that will be cut frequently or use a thin towel. Nothing bad, but annoying. Wipe: Cases that fit kids bikes are really hard to come by. The reason I bought this was because my kids bikes wouldn't fit on our hitch mounted Saris tray carrier. The fact that it is suitable for children's bikes is a huge plus in my opinion. I will be taking my adult bike with me soon to see if the current length will fit. I paid $22 which is very cheap so I'm very happy. I would probably try the cheaper Swagman before paying $99 (full retail price). I've had good luck with cheap bike racks on forks ($39) in the past and have ridden 4 bikes cross country a few times. If you want to be on the safe side, the build quality alone is $99 just for peace of mind. If Swagman didn't have the annoying downsides of Sportman, I could trade quality for ease of use (haven't installed Swagman yet). Will I ever pay $250 for a Thule or Yakima? No, not when there are great break options. Some Thule/Yakima products really make it, like pallet hitch mounts and roof racks. In my experience, cheap bike racks work just fine.
