Review on AVerMedia Live Gamer ULTRA GC553: 4Kp60 HDR Pass-Through Capture Card with Ultra-Low Latency for PS4 Pro and Xbox One X Recording and Streaming. by Brad Arthur

I was very impressed with the GC553 external capture card even though we had a difficult relationship. Minimum available USB A 3.1 ports. There is no bone, it just turned on, but no data was transmitted over that connection. You MUST use the included cable or it won't work. Then I tried updating the firmware to the latest version and it failed twice, okay, not normal. So I thought maybe restarting the device would help. This caused everything to get mixed up, the device no longer showed up with its correct name but as 'Westbridge' and not a capture device, making things look bad. After doing a lot of searching and emailing the company's support team, I was able to find a small article on the support site called "GC553 Recovery Utility Steps" which is a great little app and guide on how to reset the device the factory firmware contained again display correctly in Windows. (If necessary, go to the AverMedia website under Support FAQ and search for GC553 recovery and look at the F/W upgrade tab). So after restoring the device, I was finally able to flash it to the latest firmware. The only thing I can notice is that the side of the USB-C connector is a bit loose when I press lightly on the cable, this causes windows to constantly publish noise from the connected device. I think the only advice is to be very careful with the cable that comes with it as no other USB-C cable will work with the device. After this review was over I was very impressed with the actual performance and capture of the device compared to the old Thunderbolt Blackmagic Intensity Extreme I was using. I could now shoot in full 2560 x 1440 resolution without having to use a scaler in my setup, which eliminates other hardware. In short, if you need a small and portable capture device, this is the best one for December 2018. Just pay attention to the plug and connection on the device itself and be careful not to move or slide it during the firmware update.
