Watercolor Pencils Vs. Traditional Tubes of Watercolor Paints. What is better? In the past I have used traditional Winsor & Newton tube watercolors but have gradually abandoned them. These pens contain much more vibrant colors that you can never achieve with tube watercolors. Because the pigment comes from a pen, it's thinner than regular watercolor paint, but still sooooo bright! They're also easier to mix when done right! In my work, I almost never use these watercolor brushes directly on paper. First, find something with a smooth surface (like a sheet of white plastic or a waxed paper plate). Then apply marker to the surface so there is enough ink to work with. This allows the paint to be mixed and, if necessary, diluted with water before it is applied to the painting. I don't usually use the blender brush that comes with the pens. I use other traditional watercolor brushes from there. I mostly buy pencils just for the pigment in them, but it's worth it!
