I recently found in a closet my 80's Dual CS-500 with a Shure V15 VMR cartridge. Miraculously it still works, but I was just guessing at downforce as I couldn't find the little seesaw-like device I last used to make this adjustment. I decided to spend $10 and buy a new one and was surprised to find a digital scale in this price range. The scale arrived perfectly calibrated to weigh 5 grams. Scales only weigh up to 5 grams and this is normal. Turns out my downforce was set at 3.5g (too much) and it was easy to get it down to the 1.75g downforce suggested by Shure using that scale and it all sounds great. Very satisfied. The only problem was that with this player the stylus automatically lowers when the disc speed stabilizes, so I couldn't put the scale on the disc. I tried turning off the power and the player won't drop the needle. I figured I'd have to remove the disc (it's a belt drive so it's a bit of a hassle) but this device turned out to barely fit outside the disc and I still managed to convince the turntable to to lower it with a pen. So bonus points for being compact enough to be able to do that.
