I discovered the benefits of U.2 drives with my old X99 boards, which had tons of ports, before it became obvious that consumer PCs would ditch that port (and almost useless SATA Express ports) for M.2 slots. The upside was that high-quality, enterprise-class drives (the format really caught on in data centers) that fit into empty 2.5-inch bays in your case, but delivered NVMe speeds β all at a potentially good price. New and used discs are very common to find. Burning limits on used discs may be exhausted, but for the player who tends to burn once and then only update files here and there with updates/patches, they can be stolen. In any case, U.2 drives can be a good buy, but modern motherboards lack connectors. You can have many PCIe slots, and this turns a slot into a U.2 connector (and space to install a drive) .1.5-4TB in one and you We're in business! Everything is plug and play, although you may have trouble booting from disk (there are variables that can make this possible). To me, this is a great home for the Steam library.
