I use primes almost exclusively. I usually only use Zoom for video interviews or running videos. In such cases I have mostly used the Sony/Zeiss 24-70 F4 FE. For everything else, like portraits, landscapes, and art videos, I used prime numbers because I prefer the best look over convenient zoom. This 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is the first zoom lens in the Sony system and I can use it for almost any scenario. It's ridiculously sharp and renders images beautifully. It focuses on the a7rII very quickly and silently. I can easily recommend him. When trying to decide between this and a prime lens or two like the Sony/Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 or 35mm f/1.4, there are a few things to consider: primes capture a lot more light, meaning you can get cleaner/more imaging images by using lower ISOs and faster shutter speeds. Prime numbers have better background blur. Blurred backgrounds tend to work better for portraits. Fixes individually are cheaper and smaller. But with two fixes, not everything is so clear. The fixes are probably still the best quality overall, but it's very close. If your goals are more artistic and you have time to switch lenses, you'll probably like Primes better. If you just want to document events or life as it happens, this zoom might be your best bet.
