They provide extra protection for the surface the ladder rests on
On the other hand, they definitely do what they're supposed to do; Namely, they provide additional damage protection at the end of the ladder and provide additional support to keep the ladder stable. However, my ladder (Werner Fiberglas 24ft) was quite a hassle to attach and the ladder can no longer fully collapse as it blocks the last few inches of rail from collapsing. I would buy them again.
